Below is an email from Brian Smith at NWS Omaha/Valley concerning Skywarn Recognition Day coming up this weekend. ...Brian Smith sent... Skywarn Recognition Day 2017 is set for Dec. 2nd 2017,. The event starts at 00Z on Dec 2 (6 PM CST Dec.1st) and runs 24 hours. Skywarn Recognition Day was developed by the National Weather Service (NWS) and the ARRL in 1999. This is the 19th year that this event has been held. The Valley NWS office and local HAMS have participated in every one of these events. This event celebrates the contributions that volunteer Skywarn Amateur Radio operators make to the National Weather Service. During this event, local amateur radio volunteer spotters and net control personnel operate several radio stations at the NWS office. They make contact with other NWS offices, and thousands of other amateur radio operators around the U.S. and world. Details of this event can be found at: http://www.weather.gov/crh/skywarnrecognition We would like a good turnout for this event. We need some good radio operators to make contacts. So if you can come out and make some contacts, that would be great! We have an HF radio here as well as 2 meter and 440 MHz, APRS radios. If you want, you can bring your own HF unit out here. If you have an antenna, that would be great too as we can set you up in our conference room. The address is 6707 N. 288th Street, Valley NE. Just take highway 275 to the Highway 64 Valley Exit (The one that goes to Leshara). Head west until you get to the building next to the radar (Looks like a big volleyball on a tower). If you need to contact me for more information, email me or contact me at my cell phone number below. Thanks much and 73 , Brian E. For those of you that want information on the QCWA Nebraska Chapter 25, please Like Us on our Facebook page. This is an excerpt of one of our recent articles. Nebraska Chapter 25 is the sponsor for the annual NE QSO Party (QP) held in April, and the 2017 edition of the QP was held the weekend of April 22/23. We had nearly twice the number of out-of-state entrants this year, due in large part to the participation of Bob, WØBH, and Lorna, KØWHY, from Kansas as a rover. The overall winner of the out of state award, a gift certificate to Omaha Steaks, was John, N6MU. And the in-state winner was Joe WØBD. Fred KBØLF, operating the Chapter 25 club station NEØQP, activated 23 counties over the QP weekend. Lots of miles were logged on his 1993 Chevy Blazer. Nebraska Sesquicentennial QSO Party. Nebraska is celebrating its 150th anniversary of Statehood in 2017, the anniversary date being 1 March 2017. In celebration of this anniversary date, there was a week long QSO Party from the end of February to the beginning of March in celebration of the anniversary, and many of the Nebraska QCWA Chapter 25 members participated in the planning and execution of this QSO Party. (see www.NE150HAMS.org) . To honor some of Nebraska's pioneer/homestead era writers and authors, Fred KBØLF, operated portable during the week from Red Cloud (Willa Cather), Elmwood (Bess Streeter Aldrich), and Bancroft (John Neihardt). See the (Above) attached picture at the Willa Cather memorial prairie. NE stations will continue to be on the air during 2017 using 1x1 calls or (their call)/NE150. Chapter members have been supporting WØN, a 1x1 call that has been on the air since the first of the year, mostly on weekends. WØN activity can be tracked on Facebook (NE150hams) Like it. The annual ARRL Nebraska State Convention was held in April in Lincoln and Nebraska QCWA Chapter 25 had a booth at the Convention. Nebraska Chapter 25 Directors Steve AGØL and Kurt WBØAEA set up the booth and greeted convention patrons during the day. The club had a raffle and awarded a handheld HT to the winner. We also solicited memberships for QCWA Nebraska Chapter 25. See you next year at the 2018 ARRL Nebraska State Convention. ... See more
